What is the message of the Book of Isaiah?
Isaiah focused on true worship. He made a connection between worship and the fair treatment of others. Isaiah called the people to care for the needs of others.

What is in the Book of Malachi?
Malachi called the people to worship God and be just. He predicted that God would one day come to judge his people.
What is in the Book of Obadiah?
The Book of Obadiah tells the story of when a people called the Edomites moved into Judah. It reminds us that God is just.
What is in the Book of Daniel?
The Book of Daniel tells about the years of Babylonian exile. It expresses hope and tells that God is always at work protecting his people.

Esther was a Jewish girl and the wife of the Persian king. The king plotted to kill all Jews. Esther prayed, fasted, and appealed to the king to save the Jews. God heard Esther’s prayers, and the king changed his mind.
What is the story of Tobit?
Tobit was a poor, blind man. He sent his son Tobiah to Jerusalem to collect money. Tobiah met a woman named Sarah. All of Sarah’s husbands had died. The angel Raphael helped Tobiah get his father’s money, and arranged for Tobiah and Sarah to get married.
What is the story of Judith?
The Assyrians were threatening Judah. Judith offered to help. After she prayed for God’s help, she set out to the Assyrian camp. Judith’s brave actions saved the Jews. (The book doesn’t say what she did)
What is the story of Jonah?
Jonah was a man who God called to be a prophet. He did not want to be a prophet, so he sailed away on a ship. There was a great storm, and Jonah was swallowed by a huge whale. God kept Jonah safe in the whale for 3 days, and then made the whale cough Jonah safely on to shore. Jonah then accepted being a prophet.
Why did the Jews split over Greek culture?
The king was warned about the Romans trying to take over the land. To prepare them for this, he required that everyone practice Greek religion and culture. People who wanted to assimilate into Greek culture were called Hellenists, and those who did not were called the Hasidim.
Why were the Hasidim then persecuted and what did this lead to?
The king persecuted the Hasidim. This then led to a rebellion, led by Mattathias and Judas Maccabeus. Judas died in battle, and his brother Jonathan led the rebellion. Then he died, and his brother Simon negotiated independence.
Who was John Hyrcanus and how did his actions lead to more splits in the Jewish faith?
John Hyrcanus was the next king of Judah. There were disagreements over how John ruled and practiced religion, so the Hasidim split into the Pharisees, the Essenes, and the Sadducees.
How did the Essenes follow John as king and where did they worship?
The Essenes refused to have anything to do with John, and were persecuted by him. They left Judah entirely and set up a community at Qumran.
How did the Pharisees follow John as king and where did they worship?
They rejected most of John’s policies, but were not persecuted. They still worshipped in Jerusalem at the Temple, but they had a different high priest.
How did the Sadducees follow John as king and where did they worship?
The Saducees worked with John, and were sipported by them. Tey continued to worship in Jerusalem at the Temple, and John was their high priest.
