- 1994, Marc Andressen and his colleagues at University of Illinois enhanced Berners Lee’s web browser

- its the predecessor for Safari,Firefox, Chrome, and internet explorer

govt efforts to control
- the us govt has tried w/ limited success to regulate internet
- in 1994 congress named the effort to coordinate internet “National Information Infrastructure” or “Information Superhighway”

in 2003 apple itunes began offering inexpensive and legal downloads

a govt mandated warning system created by internet companies in 2013 but discontinued in 2017
net neutrality
- idea the internet is “open” and all internet sites and content should be treated equal
- under NN ISP’s cannot charge fees to access any specific websites or slow down the speeds for sites that use lots of data
- earlier this year, FCC took steps to roll back NN, allow ISP’s to charge for or restrict access
- some sites are now fighting the FCC ruling on state and federal level
