Crystal Palace, 1851

A

Joseph Paxton

First international expo happened in London in 1851. Prince Albert was behind it. Central building was “The Crystal Palace”, which was used to convey British technological superiorities.

Being a temporary exposition and display, the interior was decorated much like a greenhouse, with the glass structure, natural lighting. A very progressive and modern expression.

Various countries displayed different things. America displayed the gas lamp

Teepees carved wooden Indians are also shown. A collection of manufactured and hand carved objects. Strange combination of consumer products and manufacturing machines being displayed. Known to be the “crisis” of British design

Palais de l’Industrie, 1855

A

Built in Paris, France for the 1855 Universal Exposition

The expo happened under control of Napoleon the 3rd. Palais de l’Industrie. Inside of this building is way more advanced than what we saw in The Crystal Palace. Even bigger and more industrial glass structure.

“The Hall of Machines” was another building in Paris, which showed anything involved with mass-production.

There was also an international exhibition of art in Paris. However, the French were more interested in displaying proven artists, not necessarily modern or contemporary ones.

It was designed with the aim of surpassing the Crystal Palace in size, beauty, and technology.
