1
Q

What is the primary function of tendon?

A

To transmit force from muscle to bone OR, to resist tension.

2
Q

What type of tissue is a tendon?

A

Dense Connective

3
Q

What is tendon composed of?

A

ECM - which creates the mechanical properties of the tissue

Fibroblasts - which produce the ECM (made up of collagen and elastic fibers, ground substance)

4
Q

What is mechanotransduction?

A

Transduction of mechanical stimuli into a cellular signal and response.

5
Q

How are mechanical stimuli sensed?

A

Collagen fibers in the ECM which attach to the cytoskeleton

Stretch-activated ion channels

6
Q

How are mechanical stimuli transduced?

A

Direct structural links between cytoskeleton and nucleus

Intracellular signaling

7
Q

How do transduced signals influence gene expression?

A

They do this to increase/decrease production of ECM components to maintain homeostasis

8
Q

What is Physical Stress Theory?

A

Changes in the relative level of physical stress cause a predictable response in all biological tissue.

PHYSICAL STRESS -> PREDICTABLE RESPONSE
