1
Q

What to do before inserting a condom catheter

A

Grab a wash basin of warm water and clean penis with washcloth, skin cleanser and warm water. Wash glans penis first in circular motions and then wash shaft of penis with downward motions, and then dry

2
Q

How does the condom catheter stay on the penis ?

A

It is self adhesive

3
Q

When applying the condom catheter, how many inches of space should be left between the tip of the penis and the end of the condom sheath?

A

1-2 inches

4
Q

When applying the condom catheter we want to make sure ………………..

A

that it is secure enough to prevent leakage but not so tight as to constrict blood vessels and cause irritation.

5
Q

Is the risk for a UTI with a condom catheter higher or lower than that of an indwelling catheter ?

A

It is lower with a condom catheter

6
Q

The drainage tubing should be secured to

A

the patients inner thigh with velcro leg strap or tape

7
Q

The drainage bag should be secured below ………………

A

the level of the bladder

8
Q

What are the steps for inserting an male indwelling urinary catheter

A

Set up sterile field
Put on sterile gloves
Clean glans penis with antiseptic solution using cotton swabs
Inject lubricant into penis
Insert catheter into glans and advance to the bifurcation or Y level of the ports
inflate the catheter balloon by injecting the entire volume of sterile water in the prefilled syringe
pull gently on catheter after balloon is inflated to feel resistance
attach catheter to drainage system

9
Q

What does the nondominant hand do while catheterizing the male urinary bladder ?

A

It holds the penis. Once the nondominant hold touches the penis it is considered nonsterile and so remains in place for the remainder of the procedure for support.

10
Q

What does the dominant hand do while catheterizing the male urinary bladder ?

A

It cleans glans penis, inserts the lubricant and the catheter and inflates the balloon

11
Q

What to do if you meet resistance while inserting male urinary catheter

A

do not force it! ask patient to bear down as if urinating and to take deep breaths.
Also try rotating the catheter slightly

12
Q

Most common type of HAI’s acquired

A

Catheter associated UTI

CAUTIS

13
Q

What is the most important risk factor for the development of a urinary tract infection ?

A

The duration of time the catheter is left in

14
Q

When documenting catheterization, make sure to note -

A

time you inserted catheter, the size of the catheter used, the amount of urine output if intermittent and the patients reaction to the procedure

15
Q

When catheterizing a female bladder, what do you do when no urine comes out ?

A

Make sure catheter is actually within the urethra. A common mistake is to insert the catheter into the vagina. In this case, you would remove the catheter and with a new catheter, get help from team member to identify urethra and then insert it.

16
Q

When performing an intermittent catheterization, make sure to lubricate the tip of the catheter _________ inches

A

1-2 inches

17
Q

When collecting a urine specimen from an indwelling urinary catheter, what do we not want to do ?

A

We do not want to get the urine sample from the catheter drainage bag because the urine is not fresh and bacteria may be present on the bag.

Also do not open the drainage system to obtain urine specimens to avoid contamination of the system and bladder infection

18
Q

How much of a urine sample should we at least get ?

A

10 mL

19
Q

We obtain a urine specimen from an indwelling urinary catheter through what ?

A

A special sampling port in the tubing

20
Q

Before collecting the urine specimen from an indwelling urinary catheter, what do we want to do to the tubing ?

A

Clamp the catheter drainage tubing or bend it back on itself distal to the port

21
Q

When collecting a urine specimen from an indwelling urinary catheter, what do we do if an insufficient amount of urine is present in the tubing ?

A

Allow the tubing to remain clamped up to 30 minutes in order to collect a sufficient amount of urine

22
Q

When removing an indwelling urinary catheter, what technique should we use ?

A

Clean technique

23
Q

After removing an indwelling urinary catheter, what may the patient experience ?

A

burning or irritation for the first few times he or she voids after removal
May also be more difficult to urinate as a result of decreased bladder muscle tone and swelling of the urethra

24
Q

What is the main key point about removing an indwelling urinary catheter ?

A

Make sure the balloon is deflated

25
Q

What is important to encourage after removing the indwelling urinary catheter ?

A

Adequate fluid intake
