  • Big industries dump their untreated industrial waste straight into the river.
  • The airport uses it to dump its untreated oil

  • River Mithi clogs up and blocks drains. Plants then grow on some of the waste - increasing the risk of flooding

  • Happened in July 2005. 1 quarter of Mumbai was flooded.
  • Roads and railway lines were under water.
  • No airports. No electricity. 400 people died

  • By setting up Mithi River project with the river channel dreged to make it deeper
  • This allows it to hold more water.
  • Banks smoothed near bends in river.
