What are the regulators of care homes in England?
Care Quality Commission (CQC)
When is covert adminsitration of drugs not allowed?
When the patient has the capacity to consent
Most common in dementia care homes, as they cant remember if they took the medication
What is a MAR chart?
Medicine Administration Record (MAR)
Used to record how and when medications are given (or not), and cannot be used for prescribing medications
What can nurses administer that care workers cant?
Injections
Rectal medications
Drugs through a PEG line
Oxygen
What happens to the patients medications when they die?
They are kept for 7 days incase the Coroners Office or courts request them
How do MDSs work in care homes?
Each medication is labelled and blistered separately into the correct time of day
White –> Early morning
Pink –> Breakfast
Yellow –> Lunch (early afternoon)
Orange –> Tea (late afternoon)
Blue –> Bed
Was is known as a ‘Chemical Cosh’?
Prescribing drugs to make the lives of the care home workers easier (eg, sedating angry patients)

What must care home staff do before administring homely remedies?
Check with a Dr/Pharmacist/Nurse to ensure it doesnt interact with their current medication
