1
Q

What are three main sources?

A

Chalk
Marble
Limestone

2
Q

How is quicklime manufactured?

A

Thermal decomposition

3
Q

What is thermal decomposition equation of quicklime?

A

CaCO3 + heat ⇌ CaO + CO2

4
Q

How is quicklime manufactured?

A

made in rotary kiln: air blows CO2 out before they combine again

5
Q

What is the limestone cycle?

A
  1. Limestone (CaCO3) + heat
  2. Calcium oxide (CaO) + add water
  3. Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) + dissolve in water
  4. Calcium hydroxide solution (limewater) (Ca(OH)2) + bubble carbon dioxide into limewater
6
Q

What is the equation for the addition of water to calcium oxide?

A

CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2

7
Q

What are the three uses of quicklime?

A

Making steel from iron
To neutralise acidity in soil
Drying agent in industry

8
Q

What are the uses of slaked lime and lime?

A

Neutralise acidity in soil, and in lakes affected by acid rain,
Neutralising acidic industrial waste products, e.g. flue gas desulfurization

9
Q

What is used in the manufacture of cement?

A

calcium carbonate

10
Q

Describe the manufacture of cement (3)

A
  • In this, limestone/chalk is mixed with clay and heated in a rotary kiln.
  • Substance in mixture react producing cement (which is a mixture of calcium aluminate and calcium silicate).
  • Made into powder, when used - sprayed with water to make particles hold tight
