1

Describe the steps involved in gas chromatography.

  1. Inject sample mixture into gas chromatography instrument.
  2. Heat mixture into a gas.
  3. Helium gas (mobile phase) is added to the gas mixture.
  4. The gas mixture and helium flow through a tube with a polymer column (stationary phase) inside of it.
  5. Different substances in the mixture move through the column at different speeds. A computer registers this and produces a gas chromatogram.

2

Which substance in gas chromatography acts as the mobile phase?

Helium gas

3

Which substance in gas chromatography acts as the stationary phase?

A polymer column

4

What does the diagram show?

A gas chromatogram (the result of gas chromatography)

5

What is the name of the drug found in alcoholic drinks?

Ethanol

6

What does the diagram show?

The equipment used in gas chromatography.
