1
Q

Define a renewable resource.

A

Renewable resources are reproduced faster or at a similar rate than we use them.

2
Q

Define a finite resource

A

We use them at a faster rate than we can replace them e.g fossil fuels.

3
Q

What are the 3 risks of extracting finite resources?

A

Balancing social, economic and environmental factors:

e.g jobs and £, pollution, destroys habitats.

4
Q

What usually happens to finite resources after extraction?

A

They undergo a man made process to make them useful

5
Q

Define Sustainable Development

A

Taking into account needs of our current society and not damaging lives of future generations

6
Q

What is the problem with extracting finite resources?

A

It uses a lot of energy and produces waste products.

7
Q

Give a development to reduce energy needed during resource extraction.

A

Chemists developed a catalyst to reduce the amount of energy needed.

8
Q

Why do we need to use bioleaching and phytomining?

A

Copper-rich ores are in short supply so we extract from low-grade ores.

9
Q

Give a comparison between traditional methods of metal extraction and modern method

A

Traditional methods are very environmentally damaging but were faster

10
Q

What is meant by a malachite?

A

A copper ore contains carbonate

11
Q

Describe bioleaching in 3 steps

A
  1. Bacteria feed on low-grade ores
  2. Obtain copper ions from waste ores
  3. Displace copper ions from the leachate or use electrolysis.
12
Q

Give a disadvantage of bioleaching.

A

It’s very slow - it can take years to extract just 50%.

Scientists are researching how to speed this up

13
Q

How much copper is produced from bioleaching?

A

20% and likely to increase.

14
Q

Describe phytomining in 3 steps:

A
  1. Grow plants in a soil containing x metal (plants absorb the metal + it grows in their leaves)
  2. Harvest plants to dry and burn in a furnace
  3. Extract soluble compounds from ash by displacement or electrolysis
15
Q

Give 3 advantages of recycling metals.

A
  1. Uses less energy than sourcing new metals
  2. Cuts down on landfill waste
  3. Can melt and cast into new products
16
Q

Give 2 disadvantages of recyling

A
  1. Sends a message that it’s ok to use instead of replace

2. Things need to be separated which can use energy.

17
Q

What is a life cycle assessment?

A

Assesses each stage of a product’s life to see the damage done to the environment.
