1
Q

What type of engine is used in the F/A-18E/F?

A

The F414-GE-400 engine.

2
Q

What type of engine is used in the F/A-18A-D?

A

Either F404-GE-400 or F404-GE-402 engine.

3
Q

Describe the F/A-18 engine.

A

The engine is a low bypass, axial flow, dual-spool turbofan engine of modular construction with afterburner.

4
Q

Explain the ignition system.

A

Ignition system is an automatic, intermittent duty, AC powered, capacitor discharge system.

5
Q

Explain the ignition system circuitry.

A

Ignition system circuitry is self-contained on the engine, requiring no aircraft electrical power for operation.

6
Q

How long does the ignition system stay energized?

A

Until N2 rpm is 54% or greater or the throttle is retarded below idle.

7
Q

What is the ignition system made up of?

A

An alternator, FADEC or ECA, engine fuel control, ignition exciter, main igniter, AB igniter, AB flame sensor, two fan speed transmitters and thermocouple harnesses.

8
Q

Explain the lubrication system.

A

It’s accomplished through a self-contained recirculation, dry sump requiring no external connections or inputs. It also provides lubrication/cooling to the required bearings and gears.

9
Q

VEN

A

Variable Exhaust Nozzle

10
Q

Explain the VEN system.

A

It’s a cam and link-positioned hinged-flap, convergent-divergent nozzle, mounted to the aft end of the afterburner case.

11
Q

Explain how the VEN system is operated.

A

It’s hydraulically (fuel) operated, electrically controlled series of actuators, synchronizing shafts, links, flaps, seals, providing a controlled throat area (A8) for the exhaust gasses from the turbine
