What is bell’s palsy?

A
  • it is an idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis resulting from inflammation or compression of the VIIth cranial nerve within the temporal bone
  • manifests as dropping of the brow and corner of the mouth, as well as an inability to close the eye on the affected side
  • underlying cause not known although occurrence in late pregnancy and puerperium may be caused by the oedema, hypertension, pre-eclampsia or secondary to infection

What are some of the issues in pregnancy?

A
  • acute onset with an increased frequency during the 3rd trimester and immediate postpartum period
  • pain and disfigurement
  • may be associated hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

How is it managed and what is the midwives role?

A
  • commencement of corticosteroids
  • close monitoring for hypertension and pre-eclampsia
  • refer
  • reassurance of short-term nature of condition
  • paracetamol for analgesia
  • referral to physiotherapist and psychological support

What are some of the issues in labour?

A
  • if mother had prolonged antenatal corticosteroid use she will require hydrocortisone cover during labour
