  • much of the country is low lying, 1-3m above sea level
  • Incoming storm surges meet out flowing river discharge of the ganges, so river and coastal flooding combine
  • intense rainfall from tropical cyclones contribute to flooding
  • must of the coastline is unconsolidated sediment, susceptible to erosion
  • deforestation of mangroves has removed vegetation which once dissipated energy during storm surges

Decreased from 300,000-500,000 to 15000 from 1970 to 2017, with a higher wind speed of 260 compared to 205km/h.
