Describe the Buckeye Pipeline

A
Two (2) 12" (ID) steel pipes
One carries gasoline
One carries kerosene base aviation fuel
Pipeline operates at 1,200 psig
*maximum from LIC terminal is 200 psig

Describe the wrenches used to shut the Buckeye Pipeline

A

A) A short tee - used for opening the hinged cover of the valve
B) 3 1/2’ long wrench painted YELLOW w/ a female fitting
C) A combination wrench - combines the short tee wrench and long wrench into one tool
* approximately 3 1/2’ long, YELLOW

How is the hinged cover opened?

How many turns are required to shut the valve?

A

-Insert short tee wrench and make a quarter turn LEFT or RIGHT
-Insert 3 1/2’ wrench into valve box and turn CLOCKWISE
42 FULL turns (84 HALF turns) to shut off valve

What is the EXCEPTION to shutting a Buckeye Pipeline valve?

A

The only exceptions are the valves located on the shipper’s lines extending from the LIC terminal which requires
24 FULL turns (48 HALF turns) CLOCKWISE

Each assigned and alternate unit has been issued TWO sets of UAAC and Instruction cards. Where are they carried?

  • One set shall be carried on the apparatus
  • The other set shall be placed in a prominent clearly marked and protected place at the HW desk, for use by relocated units.
  • An extra pipeline map shall be stored w/ the UAAC and the Instruction cards.
  • Additional cans of foam MUST be stored w/ the spare wrenches for use by relocated units.

True. These wrenches are for the use of relocated companies or units not so equipped which are directed to respond to a 9000 series box.

A

March/April and September/October

c) operate metal valve covers
d) test the fit of the wrenches
e) detect any difficulties in reaching/operating these valves
* Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES shall valves be turned, closed or operated in ANY MANNER during familiarization drills.
* MUD’s may be utilized for Familiarization Drills

Buckeye Pipeline DIVISION drills

March/April & September/October

  • Shall simulate an actual incident
  • H/L shall be stretched,
  • valve covers shall be opened
  • wrenches shall be placed on operating nuts
  • pipeline shall be patrolled
  • Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES shall valves be turned, closed or operated in ANY MANNER during familiarization drills.
  • MUD’s may be utilized for Division Drills

Buckeye Pipeline BOROUGH Drills

October/November

  • Units shall carry out ALL the assignments on the Instruction Cards
  • This includes SHUTTING DOWN the valves!
  • The Borough Drills are the ONLY DRILLS where members will experience the ACTUAL closing of the valves.
