Sovereignty:

A

Legitimate or widely recognised ability to exercise effective control of a territory within recognised borders. In addition, sovereignty provides states the authority to represent their territorial entity within the international community.

States:

A

States posses a permanent population, defined territory and recognised sovereignty. States are not necessarily culturally homogenous.

Nation:

A

Groups of people claiming common bonds based on culture, language and history. Nations do not always posses internationally recognised sovereignty.

Power:

A

The ability of one global actor to influence the actions of another global actor. Power can be exercised in a range of types and forms.

Global governance:

A

Institutions, rules, norms and legal arrangements that seek to facilitate cooperation, and manage relations, between states. Governance is carried out by both governmental organisations (UN) and non-governmental organisations (ICC).

Multilateralism:

A

Systems of coordinating objectives between three or more states, usually in pursuit of objectives in particular areas.

Public Opinion:

A

The aggregate view of the adult population in a society. Public opinion plays an important role in shaping the behaviour of states, particularly in democratic societies that employ representative governments. A

Globalisation:

A

The increased mobility of goods, services, trade and capital across state boundaries. Globalisation is largely driven by advances in communication and technology.
