1
Q

Seizures are result of?

A

abnormal d/c of electrical activity in cerebral neurons

(U) originate in cerebral cortex

2
Q

Epilepsy is?

A

neuro disorder w/ recurrent seizures

3
Q

Partial Seizures:

Originate?

Simple?

Complex?

Partial w/ 2° tonic-clonic?

A

Origin in one area of brain

Simple: 20-90 sec,
focal jerking, no LOC

Complex: <2 min, ∆ or LOC,
automatic mvmt

Part w/: LOC, contraction/relax

4
Q

Generalized Seizures:

Originate?

Tonic-Clonic?

A

Whole brain, reciprocal firing of thalamus/cortex

Tonic-clonic = grand mal
LOC
Initial rigidity -> tremor -> clonic jerking -> stupor/confusion

5
Q

Absence (petit mal) seizure?

A

Sudden onset
Brief
Loss awareness but not consciousness
(P) mild clonic mvmt

6
Q

Myoclonic seizure?

A

Brief spams or rigid

(U) 2° to other seizure disorders

7
Q

Atonic seizure?

A

Sudden loss of postural tone

8
Q

GABA neurotrans role in seizures?

A

Inhibitory activity prevents general and partial seizures

∴ block of GABA receptors causes seizures

9
Q

Goal of Tx for seizures?

A

Inhibit GABA metabolism,

Stim GABA receptors

10
Q

Anticonvulsants affect contraceptives how?

Effects on fetus?

A

decrease effectiveness

increase defects

11
Q

Anticonv adjustments for preggos?

A
gradual w/d
monotherapy
lower dose
folate supp
VitK supp in month 9
12
Q

Stevens-Johnsons Synd is?

Life threatening w/ what drugs?

A

Autoimm rxn ->
Toxic epidermal necrolysis

Phenytoin/Dilantin,
Lamotrigine,
Carbamezapine/tegretol,
Calproate/valproic acid
Phenobarbital
