Q

How can we compare different antibiotics using paper discs?

A
  1. Soak same sized discs in a different antibiotics.
  2. Spread bacteria in agar plate.
  3. Place discs into agar plate.
  4. Incubate agar plate (keep warm) to grow bacteria.
  5. Observe plate - largest clear zone = best antibiotic.
  6. Repeat to make more reliable.

Q

Explain how antibiotic resistant bacteria develop by natural selection.

A

Random Mutation causes…
Variation (some resistant some not) this gives some an…
Advantage (resistant survive when antibiotic used) so they..
Survive and…
Reproduce and their…
Genes passed on (next generation all resistant)

Q

How can we stop antibiotic resistant super bugs (bacteria) from spreading:

A
  1. Wash hands before meals and after going to toilet.
  2. Use antiseptics to clean cuts.
  3. Clean toilets and kitchens with disinfectants.
  4. Use sterile medical equipment.
