Anthropology and Odontology Flashcards
Anthropology
is the study of humans
Forensic anthropology:
the application of the study of human skeletons (& their identification) to matters involving the public and the law.
The Five main functions of bone:
1) SUPPORT-for attachment & support of softer tissues.
2) MOTION-bones act as levers, powered by muscles at the joints
3) PROTECTION-protect soft organs, ie brain
4) GROWTH-bones are centers of growth
5) PRODUCTION-of red blood cells in the bone marrow
Ossification
is the process of bone formation, in which connective tissues, such as cartilage are turned to bone or bone-like tissue. Ossification of all bones in humans is usually completed by age 25.
BIOLOGICAL PROFILE:
A Biological profile consists of assessing the class characteristics of age at death, gender, race and height. Individual characteristics such as injury to a bone or unique dental work may also be identified.
Sexual differences in human skeleton:
1) Pelvis: Sciatic notch, is a useful trait for distinguishing sex. It is narrower in males (refer to text for pictures). Also, the pubic angle is narrower in males and wider in females.
2) Skull: In males, they tend to have a sloping forehead, prominent brows, a larger mastoid process and a larger external occipital area at the rear of the skull (refer to text for pictures).
Odontology
Definition: The examination of dental evidence including teeth, mouth and jaws for forensic purposes. It also includes the presentation of expert evidence in a court of law.
Identification of dental remains:
- Burning, drowning, fire, explosion or decomposition cases may require identification of victim by their teeth
- Prior dental records must exist for matching
- Comparison of post mortem and ante mortem dental records can confirm the conclusion
