Outline the 3-delay model

-1st delay= the recognition by women and families of the need to seek care
-2nd delay=accessing care
-3rd delay=receiving appropriate care in the facility

How do you work out maternal mortality ratio (MMR)

-Number of maternal deaths/1000 live births

What must be checked at every antenatal visit in order to detect pre-eclampsia?

-Blood pressure & urine

What is a maternal 'near miss'

-A woman who nearly died but survived a complication that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy

Define Nulliparous

A woman who has never given birth either by choice or for any other reason

What are some risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus ? (GDM)

-BMI above 30kg/m^2
-Previous macrosomic baby weighing 4.5kg or above
-previous gestational diabetes
-Family history of diabetes( first-degree relative with diabetes)

How can we test for GDM?

75g 2hr oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28weeks
-Don't use fasting plasma glucose

What is HbA1c?

-A form of haemoglobin that is bound to glucose
-Aka glycosylated or glycated haemoglobin
-Routinely performed in people with type 1& type 2 diabetes mellitus
-Normal range is under 42mmol/mol
-Pre diabetes ranges from 43/47mmol/mol
-Above that= diabetic level
-We don't use this to test for GDM
