What is ankyloglossia?

A

There is no consistent definition. Congenital anomaly characterized by abnormally short lingual frenulum. It can be classified based on the degree of fusion remaining between the tongue and the floor of the mouth.

What is the etiology of ankyloglossia?

A

Tongue is fused to the floor of the mouth in early development and typically becomes less fused with the frenulum left as the only remnant of initial attachment. Typically occurs in isolation

A

4.2-10.7% of newborn

What is the evidence regarding breastfeeding difficulties and ankyloglossia?

A

There is no absolute relationship between ankyloglossia and breastfeeding difficulties

What is recommended?

A

Consultation with a HCP with expertise in breastfeeding is recommended before referring a child for frenotomy
