1

Common cause of bradycardia and animals under anesthesia!!!!

Hypothermia

2

Anti-cholinergic agents

Are parasympatholytic and sympathomimetic!!!!

-Inhibit bradycardia from vagus stimulation
-reduce salivary and respiratory secretions
-mydriasis
-reduced salivation and resp secretions
-reduced G.I. motility

3

Why should you exercise caution with ace in aggressive animals

What other class of drugs relieves aggressive inhibition
Is ace more clinically effective in dogs or cats. Effects

Removes fear of you, animal may attack

BZD

Dogs

Anti-emetic, mild antihistamine, tranquilizer

4

Is ace contraindicated in seizure history

T/F: BZD facilitate the onset & maintenance of sleep and are used as anticonvulsants

Sedation lasts longer than analgesia with which class of drugs

No

T

A2-agonist

5

Respiratory depression is rare in animals were given appropriate doses and are awake and in pain in which class of drugs

They can cause nausea and vomiting most commonly in which type of patient

Opioid analgesic agents

Non-painful and healthy

6

Recuvyra

Highly concentrated form of fentanyl intended to be applied to the skin on dorsal scapular area of dogs, four days with single application. Meant to treat postoperative pain

7

Remifentanil

Synthetic opioid that it has been used with propofol CRI to provide total IV anesthesia in dogs. Very rapidly recovery, no residual analgesia

8

Butorphanol

Primary partial kappa agonist. Good sedative, very poor analgesia. Good with visceral, not somatic pain (which originates from skin, muscle, or skeleton). Can be used to partially reverse opioid - VERY weak partial mu-agonist

9

Buprenorphine

In cats, well-absorbed thru buccal and sublingual mm. Primarily partial mu-agonist

10

Tramadol

Opioid metabolite in some species (cats, not dogs). Inappropriate as sole analgesia unless very mild pain

11

Why is ketamine useful for patients at risk for hypotension

It causes sympathetic predominance: cardiovascular stimulation, increased heart rate, cardiac output, blood pressure. Also preserves ventilators response to hypercapnia when used alone

12

Ketamine should be used with caution in which kinds of patients

Liver and renal; liver biotransformation in dog, largely excreted unchanged by the kidney in cats

13

Propofol

Contraindicated what kind of patient

Sedative-hypnotic Agent. No analgesia. No preservative, constituents support bacterial growth. Should be thrown out 6h after opening

CV

Repeated administration or CRI in cats: Heinz body production, anorexia, retching, lethargy, malaise, diarrhea

14

Etomidate

Utra-short acting, non-barbiturate hypnotic agent. Primarily used for induction in cardiac disease and C-sections in debilitated animals. No analgesia, poor muscle relaxation

Can cause myoclonus, propylene glycol vehicle

15

Alfaxalone

Has myocardial depressant effect

Apnea or Bradypnea,

Arrhythmias, hypertension, hypothermia possible

No Antimicrobial preservative. Do not mix with any other agents in syringe
