Q

what was the black period of surgery?

A

because there was no germ theory until 1865 wounds were getting infected when they performed deeper surgery
Anaesthetics did not lead to more people surviving surgery, just less pain, meaning surgeons could go slower as no pain felt so more blood loss making higher death rates!!
