Walking Equation

 

VO2 = 3.5 + 0.1 (speed) + 1.8 (speed)(fractional grade)

a.k.a.

VO2 = Rest + Horizontal + Vertical

S= speed in m·min-1 (convert if needed)

G= grade in decimal form (i.e., 5% is 0.05); if 0% grade, then vertical=0

R= resting component

Running Equation

VO2 = 3.5 + 0.2 (speed) + 0.9 (speed)(fractional grade)

a.k.a.

VO2 = Rest  + horizontal +  vertical

S= speed in m·min-1 (convert if needed)

G= grade in decimal form (i.e., 5% is      0.05); if 0% grade, then vertical=0

R= resting component = 3.5 METs

(All variables are the same as for walking)

** NOTE: VO2 is reported as mL•kg-1•min-1

Leg Cycling (Ergonometry)

 

VO2 = 7 + 1.8(work rate)/(body mass)

aka

VO2 = (Rest+Workload) + 1.8(wattage)/body mass

M = mass (weight of subject in kg)

W = work rate in kgm/min = wattage


1W = 6.12 kgm•min-1

kgm•min-1 = R•D•f

R = resistance in kg
D = distance of the fly wheel; 6m for Monark bike
F = frequency in rpm **** 7 = 3.5 MET + 0 workload rpm (3.5)
