ABSTRACT
Kohlberg developed a stage theory of moral reasoning (see findings), using a 12 year longitudinal, cross cultural study of 75 American boys. Plus boys from Great Britain, Canada, Taiwan, Mexico & Turkey. Every 3 years the boys were interviewed about 3 (out of 9) hypothetical moral dilemmas, such as the Heinz Dilemma, promoted by 10 or more open questions. This gave him detailed information about their view of each dilemma. He argued that moral reasoning develops over time as children pass through different maturation stages into adolescence.Kohlberg’s findings outline 6 stages of moral development. His arguments were largely drawn from Piaget’s stages of development.Progression through the stages is dependent on cognitive development.
