Who was Marcus Garvey?

A

Marcus Garvey was the head of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. In response to increased post-war racial tension, the association proposed leaving America for Africa.

When did the French Revolution begin? What made the general population abruptly doubt the Monarchy?

A

The French Revolution began in 1789.

The Age of Enlightenment (early 18th Century) sparked new, more Democratic, governmental ideologies. This sincerely questioned the older forms of government.

How many Estates made up the French Old Regime? Who made up those Estates?

A

Three Estates

  • First Estate- Clergy
  • Second Estate- Nobility
  • Third Estate- Rest of the Population

What was the purpose of the Estates General?

A

The Estates General was a meeting of the three Estates to vote on critical political issues. Each Estate was allowed one vote.

How was the Estates General corrupt?

A

The Clergy and the Nobility always voted for the same ideas, winning 2 to 1 each time. This left the Third Estate (majority of the population) ignored and unheard.

What was the National Assembly? What did it accomplish?

A

The National Assembly was established by the Third Estate, who broke away from the Estates General. They did not dispurse until a new Constitution was drawn up.

What three factors led to the Storming of the Bastille?

A
  1. The corruption of the Estates General.
  2. The soaring price of bread (80% of income spent on bread).
  3. Fear of a plot to dissolve the National Assembly.

Explain the Storming of the Bastille and its significance.

A

July 14, 1789. The Bastille was used as a prison and a garrison for military weaponry. 800 men rallied and roited to overthrow the stronghold.

It symbolized the fall of the Old Regime, strength in the Bourgeois, and it saved the National Assembly from collapse.

What role did the Great Fear play in a new Declaration?

A

Rumors of a strong aristocratic army to stop the Revolution led to a mad panic (Great Fear) by the peasantry.

It instigated more riots and raids, ultimately resulting in the fold of King Louis XVI. This allowed a new Declaration of the Rights of Man to be drawn up by the National Assembly.

  1. Abolition of Special Privilages. Equal rights between man, nobility, and clergy.
  2. Statement of Human RIghts. Liberty, freedom of religion, equal treatment under the law.
  3. Subordination of Church to State. Eliminated privilages of the Roman Catholic Church.
  4. A Constitution for France (1791). More Democratic, limited power for the King.
