In the event of a radiological incident inovlving the release or use of radioactive iodine, the use of KI (POTASSIUM IODINE) may be necessary precaution.

A

KI will saturate the thyroid gland with iodine and help prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine
note: using KI WILL ONLY PROTECT THYROID GLAND from radioactive iodine

Adult dose recommended for FDNY members following an exposure to radioactive iodine is 130 milligrams , ONE TABLET POTASSIUM IODINE (KI) AS SOON AS AFTER EXPOSURE AS POSSIBLE

People should not take KI , IF…

A
  • Have every had THYROID DISEASE
  • know they are allergic to iodine (if allergic to shellfish, ask your doctor )
  • have certain skin disorders, dermatitis ,herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis

Engine/Ladders will carry 130 mg POTASSIUM IODINE (KI) TABLETS IN THE GLOVEBOX OF APPARATUS

-if tablets needed go to nearest DIVISION OFFICE

  • can be stored for 5 years without losing potency, refrigeration not required
  • ONLY TAKE KI WHEN DIRECTED BY
