What are the stages of intellectual development ?

Intellectual development :

- Infancy / Early childhood :
- Stages of rapid intellectual development.

- Adolescence / Early adulthood :
- Development of logical thought, problem solving and memory recall skills.

- Middle adulthood :
- Can think through problems and make sound judgements using life experiences.

- Later adulthood : Changes in the brain can cause short-term memory decline / slower thought processes and reaction times

Intellectual and language skills :
- Brain grows rapidly during first few years of life.
- 12 month old baby will be saying first words.
- 2 year old able to name parts of their body.
- 5 year old able to construct complex sentences.

- Begin to make babbling noises - learn to control muscles associated with speech.

What are the 5 aspects associated with intellectual development ?

5 aspects :
- Language development: Essential for organising thoughts and to share and express ideas, important for clarification.

- Problem-solving: required both to work things out and make predictions about what might happen.

- Memory: required for storing, recalling and retrieving information

- Moral development: allows for reasoning and making choices, informing the individual how to act in particular situations and how to act toward ones self/others

- Abstract thoughts and creative thinking: essential for thinking / discussing situations and events that cannot be observed.

What did Piaget believe ?

Intellegence is fixed at birth, and children actively seek to understand the world they live in. Learning through experience, developing 'schemas' to make sence of the world around them.

What are the 4 stages of cognitive development ?

Sensorimotor (0-2 years) - children learn by using senses and thinking is without language.

Pre-operational (2-7 years) - pre-logical thinking is with language; words and symbols are used to help the child make sence of the environment
