Q

What state of matter does this picture show?

A

Solid

2
Q

What state of matter does this picture show?

A

Gas

3
Q

What state of matter does this picture show?

A

Liquid

4
Q

Which state(s) of matter have a fixed shape?

A

Solid

5
Q

Which state(s) of matter have a fixed volume?

A

Solid and liquid

6
Q

Which state(s) of matter are easy to squash? (compressible)

A

Gas

7
Q

Which state(s) of matter flow easily?

A

Liquid and Gas

8
Q

How do the particles move in a solid?

A

They cannot move and are in a fixed position.

9
Q

How do the particles move in a liquid?

A

They can move past each other

10
Q

How do the particles move in a gas?

A

They move very quickly?

11
Q

What is diffusion?

A

The random movement of particles until they are evenly spread.

12
Q

Why can diffusion not happen in a solid?

A

The particles of a solid are in a fixed potision and cannot move.

13
Q

What causes pressure?

A

Particles bumping in to the walls of the container they are in.

14
Q

What happens to the pressure inside a balloon when you blow it up? Explain why.

A

The pressure increases because there are more air particles.

15
Q

Does diffusion happen faster at colder or warmer temperatures? Explain why.

A

Warmer temperatures because the particles have more energy.

16
Q

How did Robert Brown first explain the random movement of pollen grains under a microscope?

A

He thought they were alive.

17
Q

How did Robert Brown disprove his hypothesis that pollen grains were alive?

A

He looked at pollen that had been dead for 100 years which showed the same movement as the fresh pollen. The pollen could therefore not be alive.

18
Q

Explain, using the particle theory, why Robert Browns’ pollen grains were moving.

A

The water molecules were moving randomly and bumping in to the pollen grains which made the pollen grains move in the opposite direction.

19
Q

What is a liquid

A

Something with a fixed volume but no fixed shape.

20
Q

What is a chemical compound

.

A

A substance made of more than one type of atom chemically joined together a good example is water.

21
Q

Give a description of a liquid.

A

Something with a fixed volume but no fixed shape.

22
Q

What is meant by a property, Name a property that a solid has ?

A

A description of how a material behaves and what it is like. Hardness is a property of some solids.

23
Q

what is meant by flammable ?

A

Easily set on fire.

24
Q

What are the tree states of matter ?

A

There are three different forms that a substance can be in: solid, liquid or gas. These are the three states of matter.

25
Q

what happens to a tyre to make it flat ?

A

Some of the air is released.

26
Q

Why is it when Jon spray’s deodorant at the back of the room Jenny can smell it at the front of the room, what do we call this process ?

A

We call this diffusion , as the deodorant particles travel between the gases in the air till they reach Jenny’s nose.

27
Q

what is a hazard ?

A

Something that could cause harm.

28
Q

What is air pressure?

A

The force on a certain area caused by air molecules hitting it.

29
Q

What do scientists mean by a vacuum ?

A

A completely empty space, containing no particles.

30
Q

Describe how gas pressure can be changed in a tyre .

A

By Blowing it up or letting air out.
