    • the Bank of England (1694) catered to government financial needs, administered public debt, and issued banknotes

Bubble Act (1720)

A
  • English statute passed on 9, June 1720 to prevent corporate fraud.
  • It forbade all joint-stock companies not authorized by royal charter.
  • One of the reasons for the act was to prevent other companies from competing with the South Sea Company for investors’ capital
  • The Act was repealed in 1825

Extreme economic backwardness definition and example

A
  • Beyond a certain limit, though, when a country is exceedingly backward from an economic standpoint, not necessarily can a process of industrialization and modern economic growth be successfully triggered
  • This is consistent with Allen’s idea that poverty ( = extreme backwardness) can well be a trap
  • Egypt’s failed experiment with industrialization under Mehmet Ali in the first half of the 19th century is a case in point
