100s of students protested against communism and as a result many were killed in Tiananmen Square by the army. Many people are unaware of what happened on this day as the press and the internet were censored

Google withdrew its services from China as the government insisted that searches about the events of 1988 were censored

- Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are unavailable and more than 400 million Chinese citizens instead use Youku Tudou
- Yet in North Korea they have no access to the internet as a result of state controls

Deng Xiaoping - the period of economic reform known as the socialist market economy, opening up China to foreign investors
What is trade protectionism?
The economic policy of limiting trade between countries through tariffs on imported goods, restrictive quotas and regulations that disadvantage foreign companies compared to domestic ones
What do protectionists believe?
There is a need for restrictions on trade so they protect their own economy, standards of living for domestic workers and the dominant culture - many argue that it is impossible for young businesses and industries at an early stage of development to become established unless they are protected from the full rigours of free trade for a period of time
What is L’exception culturelle?
A political concept in France on trade negotiations introduced in 1993. It allows for culture to be treated differently from other commercial products. This allows them ti restrict imports of foreign films and media so they can limit cultural erosion. Subsidies are provided for film production. Cinema ticket sales are taxed and the revenue is used to aid the production of French cinema
