A

A modern and common cable used for many LCD’s, projectors, and VR headsets. It carries both HD video and audio signals. It can pretty much handle any resolution.

20
Q

What is Mini-HDMI used for?

A

Mini-HDMI is used on a lot of smaller devices and usually require a cable with a Mini-HDMI connector on one end, and a full sized HDMI on the other.

21
Q

What is Display Port?

A

Display port is mostly used in monitors. It is a digital video connector used by SOME apple desktop models and some PCs, notably from DELL. It is designed by VESA as a royalty-free connector to replace VGA and DVI.

22
Q

Explain what DVI is and the different type of connections.

A

DVI = Digital Video Interface. DVI-D is for digital, DVI-A is for analog. DVI-A/D or DVI-I (interchangeable) accepts either a DVI-D or DVI-A.

DVI-D and DVI-I come in two varieties, single-link and dual-link. Single link has max bandwidth of 165MHz which is the max resolution of 1920x1080 at 60Hz, OR 1280x1024 at 85 Hz. DUAL LINK uses more pins to double the throughput. With dual link you can go up to 2048x1536 at 60Hz.

23
Q

What are the most common multipurpose cables?

A

Lightning, Thunderbolt, USB, USB C, USB 2.0, USB 3.0

24
Q

What is Lightning?

A

The Lightning connector is the standard connector for Apple iPhone devices. It can be inserted without regard to proper orientation. In other words, it can be connected on either side.

25
Q

What is USB type C?

A

Similar to lightning, it can be inserted on either side. You do not have to worry about orientation. It is the newest iteration of USB connectors. It support up to USB 3.1.

26
Q

What does USB stand for?

A

USB = Universal Serial Bus

27
Q

What are the max USB speeds?

A

USB 1.1 used LOW SPEED and FULL SPEED. Low speed ran 1.5 Mbps while full speed ran 12Mbps.

USB 2.0 introduced HI SPEED USB running at 480 Mbps.

USB 3.0 is capable of speeds up to 5 Gbps which is ten times faster than 2.0 and it is marketed as SUPER SPEED.

USB 3.1 can handle speeds up to 10 Gbps and it marketed as SUPER SPEED USB 10 Gbps or USB 3.1 Gen 2.

28
Q

Explain the USB standards.

A

2.0 is fully backward compatible with 1.1 and 3.0/3.1 is backward compatible with 2.0. Older devices will not run any faster than they used to, however. To take advantage of the fast speeds, you must connect a USB device to a USB port at least as fast as the device.

29
Q

What is the main difference between USB A and USB B?

A

USB A connectors plug upstream toward the host controller (which is why you see them on the PC) and USB B connectors plug downstream into USB devices.

30
Q

What are the standard sizes of USB A and B?

A

“Standard”, “Mini”, and “Micro”.

31
Q

Give USB connector examples.

A

Type-A is the standard USB you plug INTO a computer. Type-B is usually what you would plug into a printer. Mini-B is the type of mini USB you would plug IN to a mobile device. Micro B is the common type you would plug IN to smart phones (android). Mico-B 3.0 look like a mini and micro connect dived in half on the same connector.

32
Q

What are the different common colors used to define what USB port is what standard?

A
  1. 1 = WHITE.
  2. 0 = BLACK.
  3. 0 = BLUE
  4. 1 = TEAL
33
Q

Can USB ports be any other color?

A

YES. It is not uncommon to see laptops with red, orange, or yellow USB ports. These ports are “Always On” to charge other devices even if the laptop is turned off. There is no standard to THESE colors.

34
Q

How many pins does USB C use?

A

USB C uses 24 pins, can be inserted in either direction, and support USB 3.1.

35
Q

What is the maximum cable length allowed for the USB standards?

A

1.1 and 2.0 allow for a maximum cable length of 5 meters. The USB 3.x standards do not define a maximum cable length, but the longer the cable, the more likely the cable is to suffer from electrical interference.

36
Q

What is a serial port/cable?

A

A common connector on older PCs. It connects input devices such as a mouse or communication devices such a modem. It is also referred to as a COM port.

37
