Why should a Safety Officer be designated?

A

to improve overall scene safety where several BFES responders are operating

  1. all fire suppression operations

What are the duties of the IC in regards to appointing an ISO? (4)

A
  1. the need for saftey monitoring
  2. consider experience, training, knowledge of fire ops./ special ops. of appointee
  3. appoint additional Assistant ISOs at ISO’s request or if IC determines need
  4. brief ISO on incident action plan

What are the duties of the ISO? (10)

A
  1. Be readily identifible (blue helmet/ vest in DC’s vehicle)
  2. obtain radio and monitor radio transmissions to ensure clear Comms
  3. Survey emergency scene for purpose of monitoring all operations
  4. formulate risk hazard assessment and provide to IC
  5. ensure dept. SOGs/ policies/ training practices are followed
  6. ensure air monitoring
  7. oversee Rehab and/or Deconatmination sector est.
  8. have authority to alter, suspend, terminate any unsafe activity that involves hazard to personnel
  9. take whatever action is necessary, first through Sector Officer then IC to ensure safety of personnel when danger is not imminent
