1
Q

Would you say this chest x-ray is normal or abnormal?

A

Abnormal

2
Q

What types of patients are most likely at risk for aspiration pneumonia?

A

Older patients with dementia

3
Q

Which microorganisms most often cause clinical disease in otherwise healthy patients (so-called community-acquired pneumonia)? Name a few common organisms.

A

Streptococcus pneumonae, bacteria, e. coli, staph aureus

4
Q

Why is it important to give the proper anti-microbial drug as early as possible in the course of acute pneumonia?

A

Give the macrophages as much time as possible to clean up fibrin to keep the fibroblasts from coming in and laying down collagen and scarring the lung.

5
Q

What is this an image of?

A

Lung vessel with WBC pavementing. Characteristic of Acute pneumonia.

6
Q

What is this an image of (referring to the right side of picture)?

A

Lung tissue with fibrin deposition and neutrophil infiltration - characteristic of acute pneumonia

7
Q

What are these images characteristic of? What is within the blue rings?

A

Acute pneumonia not community acquired, due to hematogenous spread. Cavitary lesions with staph aureus within.

8
Q

Do antibiotics work with patients with HIV?

A

If they have a somewhat function immune system. If it is depressed and there is no immune system they wont do jack.

9
Q

What is this an image of in the liver?

A

Enlarged bile duct in the liver that is not functioning as normal due to scarring of the liver

10
Q

What is this in the liver?

A

High levels of adipose tissue characteristic of cirrhosis

11
Q

What are the dark staining pink regions on this section of liver?

A

Mallory or alcoholic hyaline

12
Q

What is this image indicative of in the liver (trichrome staining)?

A

This is cirrhosis of the liver due to the high amounts of collagen creating scarring of the liver.

13
Q

A patient with cirrhosis of the liver can present with esophageal bleeding. Why does this occur?

A

Liver is scarred , portal hypertension pushing fluid out to the abdomen creating dilation of veins - esophageal varicies

14
Q

What is this an image of?

A

Fallopian tube that is inflammed due to PID

15
Q

What is this an image of?

A

Normal fallopian tube

16
Q

What are the main complications of PID?

A

Cant get pregnant, Sepsis, ectopic pregnancy

17
Q

What are the typical micro-organisms involved in PID?

A

STIs - Gonococcus, Chlamydia
