What is anorexia nervosa?

A

Refers to behaviour which is adopted to keep the body as thin as possible – body weight below 85% of the expected weight for age and height (APA, 2000)

What is bulimia nervosa?

A

Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviour in order to prevent weight gain, e.g. vomiting, use of laxatives, fasting, exercising

What is binge eating disorder?

A

Recurrent episodes of binge eating

What predicts successful treatment?

A
  • Higher BMI
  • Fewer binge/purging behaviours
  • Greater motivation to recover
  • Lower depression
  • Lower shape/weight concern
  • Fewer comorbidities
  • Better interpersonal functioning
  • Fewer familial problems
  • Drop-out was predicted by more binge/purging behaviours and lower motivation to recover
