What are the three types of eating disorders?

- Anorexia nervosa
- Bulimia nervosa

What is anorexia nervosa?
A
Refers to behaviour which is adopted to keep the body as thin as possible – body weight below 85% of the expected weight for age and height (APA, 2000)

What is bulimia nervosa?
A
Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviour in order to prevent weight gain, e.g. vomiting, use of laxatives, fasting, exercising

What is binge eating disorder?
A
Recurrent episodes of binge eating

What can cause eating disorders?

- Biological factors
- Individual factors
- Family and peer influences
- Sociocultural factors & Objectification Theory
- Psychodynamic perspective

What predicts successful treatment?
A
- Higher BMI
- Fewer binge/purging behaviours
- Greater motivation to recover
- Lower depression
- Lower shape/weight concern
- Fewer comorbidities
- Better interpersonal functioning
- Fewer familial problems
- Drop-out was predicted by more binge/purging behaviours and lower motivation to recover
