Q

What would increasing the bicarbonate in the blood stream have on the pH of the blood?

A

Increases the pH

2
Q

What organ controls bicarbonate levels?

A

The kidneys

3
Q

How would diarrhea change the pH of blood?

A

It decreases the bicarbonate found in the GI tract, which decreases the amount in the blood. This decreases the pH

4
Q

What happens to bicarbonate levels when you’re making an abnormal acid (ketoacidosis, lactic acid etc)?

A

Bicarbonate levels drop, and the pH decreases

5
Q

What affect does increasing the CO2 in the blood stream have on its pH?

A

CO2 decreases pH, because it becomes carbonic acid.

6
Q

What do we call a pathological increase / decrease in bicarbonate?

What do we call a pathological increase / decrease in CO2?

A

Bicarbonate = Metabolic disturbance

CO2 = Respiratory disturbance
