Q

How is crude oil formed?

A

It is formed over millions of years from dead sea creatures that got trapped and crushed to form oil

1
Q

Where can you find crude oil?

A

You can find crude oil deep underneath the ground in lakes and pockets of caves

2
Q

What is crude oil used for?

A

It is used for many things, mostly for fuel for vehicles

4
Q

How do you turn crude oil into products such as petrol and diesel?

A

The crude oil is heated to around 350 degrees celsius and separated into fractions using Fractional distillation.

5
Q

What is crude oil?

A

Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that are found deep beneath the ground.

6
Q

What does crude oil look like?

A

Crude oil is a thick (viscous) black liquid

7
Q

If the molecules in a fraction are small, what does this mean?

A

If the molecules are small, the fraction will have a low boiling point, it would be very volatile, it will flow easily and it ignites easily

8
Q

If the molecules in a fraction are large, what does this mean?

A

If the molecules are large, the fraction will have a high boiling point, it would not be very volatile, it will not flow easily and it would not ignite easily

9
Q

What is a hydrocarbon?

A

A compound that contains only the elements hydrogen and carbon.

10
Q

What is an alkane?

A

A saturated hydrocarbon that has the general formula CnH2n+2

11
Q

What is produced when a hydrocarbon undergoes complete combustion?

A

Carbon dioxide and water

12
Q

What environmental impact does carbon dioxide cause?

A

Global warming

13
Q

What causes incomplete combustion?

A

Insufficient oxygen

14
Q

What gases cause acid rain?

A

Sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen.

15
Q

What are the products of incomplete combustion?

A

Carbon or carbon monoxide and water.
