1
Q

What are the operating modes for the flight controls?

A
  • normal mode,
  • secondary mode and
  • direct mode.
2
Q

Is aileron trim possible with the autopilot engaged?

A

No.

3
Q

Is yaw damping available in direct mode?

A

No.

4
Q

If you are reconfiguring with the autopilot disengaged, should you use the manual pitch trim?

A

Manual pitch trim is only required for a change in speed. Manual pitch trim is not required if you are reconfiguring at the same speed.

5
Q

Can you use the manual pitch trim with the autopilot engaged?

A

No. The manual pitch trim is inhibited with the autopilot engaged.

6
Q

Which manual pitch trim mechanism has priority?

A

The alternate pitch trim commands have priority over the control column pitch trim commands for all flight control modes.

7
Q

After setting the pitch trim in the green band, the EICAS displays the “STAB GREENBAND” advisory message. What does this mean?

A

The nose gear oleo strut pressure switch disagrees with the FMC computed stabiliser green band. The gross weight or CG or both may be incorrect.

8
Q

How does the alternate pitch trim system work?

A

The alternate trim switches move the trim reference speed (in normal mode) and also move the stabiliser (in all modes).

The alternate pitch trim switches are linked to the Stabiliser Trim Control Modules (SCTM) via control cables, which are linked to the stabilisier mechanically.

9
Q

When are spoilers 5 and 10 operational?

A

Only during low speed operations.

Spoilers 5 and 10 are not available in flight as speed brakes.

10
Q

How are spoilers 4 and 11 controlled?

A

Mechanically by cable from the control wheels.

Unless the speed brake lever is moved close to UP. In which case, spoilers 4 and 11 operate symmetrically as speed brakes.

11
Q

Can the speed brakes be used in flight?

A

Yes. The speed brakes can be used at any time during flight. Extension to intermediate positions is possible.

12
Q

In primary mode, the flaps and slats use which hydraulic system?

A

The centre hydraulic system.

13
Q

In primary mode, the flaps and slats use which hydraulic system?

A

The centre hydraulic system.

14
Q

Can pitch trim selections be made at Vmo/Mmo?

A

Yes. Only nose up trim selections can be made at Vmo/Mmo. Over speed protection limits nose down trim selections at Vmo/Mmo.

15
Q

At what bank angles does the bank angle pointer change to amber?

A

35 degrees.

16
Q

Can Vmo/Mmo be exceeded?

A

Yes, but continuous forward control column force must be applied.

17
Q

How can bank angle protection be overridden?

A

1) The automatic roll command to roll back to within 30 degrees of bank can be overridden by the pilot by continuous control column roll force.
2) Disengaging the autopilot by use of the autopilot disengage bar disables bank angle protection.

18
Q

Is bank angle protection provided in all flight control modes?

A

No. Bank angle protection is not provided in secondary and direct modes.

19
Q

What low speed protection is provided?

A

1) Nose up pitch trim is inhibited below minimum manoeuvring speed.
2) Control column forces become heavy near the stall speed.
3) The pilot must maintain continuous aft control column pressure to reduce speed.
4) Use of the alternate pitch trim levers does not reduce control column loads.

20
Q

What causes the “airspeed low” EICAS caution message?

A

If the airspeed is reduced to halfway within the PFD amber range.

21
Q

When will the autothrottles not engage in action to low speed protection?

A

1) The pitch mode is FLCH or TO/GA
2) Below 400 ft above field elevation on take off.
3) Below 100 ft RA on approach.

22
Q

What does stall warning consist of?

A

A stick shaker but not warning horn.

23
Q

What are the stall protection features?

A

1) The airspeed cannot be trimmed to an airspeed below minimum manoeuvring speed.
2) The autothrottles advance thrust to maintain minimum manoeuvring speed?

24
Q

When is TAC available?

A

Thrust Asymmetry Compensation is armed above 70 knots and is available during automatic and manual flight. It is not available during reverse thrust or when the system has lost engine thrust data.

25
Q

What are the details of the wheel to rudder cross tie?

A

Below 210 knots, the wheel to rudder cross tie allows rudder deflection of up to 8 degrees in order to control and engine failure. Wheel to rudder cross tie is only available in normal mode.

26
Q

What are the indications of TAC?

A

1) The rudder pedals shift in position.

2) The rudder trim indication changes.

27
Q

What is the leading edge high lift device configuration?

A

7 slats. 1 inboard of the engines and 6 outboard of the engines. Behind each engine there is one Kruger.

28
Q

What are the take off flap settings?

A

Flaps 5, 15 and 20.

29
Q

For which flap settings is load relief available?

A

Flaps 15 through to 30.

30
Q

Are auto speed brakes available in the secondary and direct modes?

A

No.

31
Q

What will cause an automatic reversion to secondary mode?

A

If the PFC detect a loss of airspeed or inertial reference data.

32
Q

Which features are not available in secondary mode?

A

1) Auto speed brakes.
2) Envelope protection features.
3) Yaw damping may be lost or degraded.

33
Q

What EICAS message appears when the flight control mode reverts to DIRECT mode?

A

“PRI FLIGHT COMPUTERS”.

34
Q

Hat does the EICAS message “FLIGHT CONTROL MODE” mean?

A

The flight control mode has changed to SECONDARY mode.

35
Q

How can the flight control mode enter DIRECT mode?

A

1) If additional failure occur beyond airspeed or inertial reference data.
2) If the pilot selects the Primary Flight Control computer disconnect switch to DISC.

36
Q

How is roll control in secondary and direct modes different?

A

Roll control is similar. But bank angle protection is not available. Spoilers 4 and 11 are mechanically controlled and spoilers 5 and 10 are locked out.

37
Q

Is flight control movement possible with a complete aircraft electrical failure?

A

Yes. A backup cable system connects to the stabiliser and selected spoilers.

38
Q

What is noticeable for flap operations in secondary mode?

A

1) The flap position indicator is expanded.
2) Flaps and slats are electrically powered.
3) Movement is significantly slower.

39
Q

What is the maximum slat and flap limit when operated in the alternate mode?

A

Slats mid range and flaps 20.

40
Q

How are the flaps extended?

A

Hydraulically in the normal mode and electrically in the secondary mode and the alternate flap mode.

41
Q

With both stabiliser switches in CUTOUT, what EICAS message displays?

A

STABILISER CUTOUT

42
Q

The EICAS message FLAPS DRIVE indicates?

A

Flap asymmetry detected. The flaps cannot be moved from the present position.

43
Q

Which hydraulic systems power the stabiliser?

A

C and R systems.

44
Q

What will cause the EICAS message “SPEEDBRAKE EXTENDED”?

A

1) Below 800 ft RA with speed brakes extended.
2) Landing flaps selected with speed brakes extended.
3) Speed brakes extended with thrust levers not at idle.

45
Q

When a caution message announces two hydraulic system failures, which items of consideration are common to all possible failures?

A

1) Handling qualities degrade.
2) Plan to land at the nearest suitable airport.
3) Place GROUND PROXIMITY FLAP OVERRIDE in OVRD.
