What is a developmental disorder?

Developmental disorders comprise a group of psychiatric conditions originating in childhood that involve serious impairment in different areas.

How can we decide is behaviour is atypical?

- Age
- Culture and environment
- Other behaviours

- Usually tested using a standardised test

What is a trajectory?

A developmental trajectory describes the progression of a given behaviour over time.

What is the causal model of development?

• Distinguish different levels of explanation that are needed to understand developmental disorders
• Three major levels of disorders: biological, cognitive and behavioural
• These levels are underlying processes which interact with a range of environmental influences to determine the observed outcome

What is neuroconstructivism?

• Neuroconstructivism is a theoretical framework focusing on the construction of representations in the developing brain. Cognitive development is explained as emerging from the experience-dependent development of neural structures supporting mental representations
