Medication Alternatives: Don’t like your attention deficit disorder? Fix it.

By , 10/17/2011 at 12:29 pm

The more I research, the more evidence I find that you can correct any learning disability, attention deficit or other shortcoming of your brain. It’s not as easy as taking a pill. But it works, and it’s permanent.

Hold on. These are bold statements. If I have ADHD, the only treatment is drugs. Except diets, meditation, and yoga which don’t really do much. Right?

Not at all. In the past few decades, stunning advances have been made in Neuroplasticity: the brain’s ability to drastically change with the right training.

What does this mean? It means that eventually, things like ADHD and other cognitive quirks won’t be “problems” anymore. (I for one believe ADHD is an asset in many ways, but that’s another discussion.)

So what is the “right” training? Here are a some resources that have reported success improving the brain permanently. (more…)

The New York Times on Bilingual Babies

By , 10/13/2011 at 8:25 am

The New York Times published an interesting overview of research on bilingual vs. monolingual infants this week. You might remember that bilingualism, and the cognitive advantages of bilingualism are topics that we are very interested in on this blog. The NYTimes article presents research on what’s happening in the development of infants who are brought up in either mono- or bilingual environments. The results are actually very interesting.

You can find the article here, but I will say that researches have found that bilingual babies are “more cognitively flexible,” which I think is a great phrase!

Brainscape Spanish is CRUSHING it

By , 10/11/2011 at 8:39 am
Hey, remember when Brainscape’s Learn Spanish app was first released on iTunes back in May?  OK, you probably don’t.  Our initial release indeed fell on a skeptical market that was hesitant to spend $40 on a seemingly simple language-learning app.

Yet it’s amazing what a few months’ worth of solid word-of-mouth will do for a great app.  The world seems to be increasingly realizing the ground-breaking advancements that we have made in the language-learning sciences, and we at Brainscape are incredibly humbled by both the momentum and product reviews that Learn Spanish has been collecting.  The single app now represents over half of our revenue, out of over a dozen paid subjects on iTunes and the web!
