Seven Language Blogs that I Read Regularly

By , 12/9/2010 at 4:38 pm

Since I am focusing a lot of my time on learning Spanish and documenting my progress (meaning I read lots of Language Learning blogs) I think it’s a good idea to share a list of blogs I read regularly so that you can easily discover these great resources. These are not the only blogs I read, but they are some of the best. Obviously there is no way that I could have found all the good ones, so if you have suggestions, please post them in the comments, or tweet them to me @aemoritz!

I will add these blogs to the blogroll, but here they are, in no particular order, on their own, for your bookmarking pleasure:

And She’s Speaking Spanish: Week 1 with Brainscape

By , at 11:51 am

It’s been one week since I’ve started my experiment of learning Spanish using only Brainscape, and, as promised, I am putting up weekly updates on my progress. It’s only been one week! So please do not criticize my accent and pronunciation too harshly. I am making mistakes, and I know there’s a lot to work on. But that’s all part of the fun.

Below is my second video. There’s a short introduction, then I just came up with some random sentences that I either swiped directly from Brainscape or put together myself based on what I’ve learned. It’s not supposed to “make sense” like a conversation, but it is important to me to speak what I am learning, and I’m finding that recording myself is a great practice tool! (more…)

Brainscape is Featured as an InSITE Presenter

By , 12/8/2010 at 4:44 pm

Andrew Cohen presenting at InSITEIn the course of being an entrepreneur – especially a young first-timer – you are blessed with several people and organizations who are inspired by your passion and want to help you succeed.  Your advisors want to give you advice, your old professors want to send you interns, your early investors want to introduce you to their big-shot contacts, and your  experienced entrepreneur friends want to help you avoid making the same mistakes that they made.  In other words, young entrepreneurs are blessed with the ability to attract free consulting, just by virtue of being young entrepreneurs.  That is an awesome phenomenon.

Yet sometimes a young entrepreneur is able to earn a form of free consulting that goes far and above any support network you could have ever imagined.  And that is what I have been blessed to receive in the form of three months working with InSITE.

Two Sides of the Same Coin: Learning AND Memory

By , at 10:26 am

In my lastest post on what makes you a better learner for life, I focused on what you can do to increase your chances of remembering something you are learning, and I only briefly touched on the differences between learning and memory: Memory formation requires having learned something, but  ”learning” something does not necessarily result in a permanent memory.

In this guest post by Dr.Bill(whom we’ve previously introduced on the Brainscape Blog this summer), we will explore, in depth, the differences between learning and memory. (more…)

How Brainscape helps you become a better learner for life

By , 12/7/2010 at 10:47 am

Learning facts and then quickly forgetting them–whether it’s the name of the person you’ve just met, or the name of the compound you’ve just memorized for your chem test tomorrow–hardly qualifies as learning if you can’t recall what you’ve “learned” the next day, or even the next minute! You may wonder why you are forgetting things so quickly after you’ve spent hours studying them. It’s because you aren’t being a smart learner. Stop learning like a goldfish and read on!

Learning Spanish with my iPhone

By , 12/6/2010 at 10:04 am

Hello, my name is Amanda, and I am Brainscape’s social marketing manager. For the last four years I’ve been at MIT, studying Brain and Cognitive Science, where I spent 0 (read: zero) percent of my time learning languages, unless you count learning Matlab for data analysis…I don’t. Since I am now a fully-initiated employee at Brainscape, and I know all about our apps, I figure it is only appropriate that I use our apps. So, as of today, I will be learning Spanish, from scratch, using Brainscape’s (yet to be released) Spanish Sentence Builder App while documenting my progress on my video blog. If you’re interested in seeing how our apps work, or what it’s like to learn a completely new language with them, check back here since I will be posting videos on this blog, as well as on my AmandaLearnSpanish YouTube Channel.

After the link is my first video: THE INTRODUCTION. I think it’s funny, so watch it! (more…)

Top 10 e-Learning Blogs

By , 12/2/2010 at 11:17 am

I love spending a whole day reading the internet, seeing where it leads me,  discovering new, amazing sites and communities and information resources. Unfortunately, most of the time I do not have that luxury, and that’s why I love a good “Top 10″ list. They cut out hours of search and reading and evaluating, making discovering the best of the best so much easier!

Below are what OnlineDegrees.org rates the Top 10 eLearning Blogs (out of 25 listed on the site). I recently came across Online Degrees during one of my leisurely days online, and I’ve found that it’s a great resource for people applying to, or already in post-secondary school, as well as learners in general.

I hope you find these sites as useful as I have. Well…as useful as they can be, seeing as Brainscape is not listed, and check out OnlineDegrees, where there’s plenty of great content.

Here are the Top 10 (As compiled by OnlineDegrees.org):
