Learning Spanish with my iPhone

Hello, my name is Amanda, and I am Brainscape’s social marketing manager. For the last four years I’ve been at MIT, studying Brain and Cognitive Science, where I spent 0 (read: zero) percent of my time learning languages, unless you count learning Matlab for data analysis…I don’t. Since I am now a fully-initiated employee at Brainscape, and I know all about our apps, I figure it is only appropriate that I use our apps. So, as of today, I will be learning Spanish, from scratch, using Brainscape’s (yet to be released) Spanish Sentence Builder App while documenting my progress on my video blog. Nice video . I’m sure you’ll succeed, just as long as you put in enough work!

One tip: watch easy stuff like Dora the Explorer to begin with, this will boost your gut feeling for Spanish grammar and will enable you to build a nice vocabulary to work with. After this you should watch programs you love, and using a flashcard program is a nice supplement of course .

And oh, all this television watching can be done on your iPhone .

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I am trying to do all of this from my iPhone. The point is to be able to learn everywhere, anytime…even in the most inconvenient and improbable of circumstances.

I think it’s possible to learn that way with the right application to a degree. Having moved myself to a different country it’s apparent that in order to master a language it is not just a matter of learning the words or hearing a native speak, you have to regularly have a two-way conversation with a native. I can understand most of what is being said to me, even write a fairly grammatically correct email to someone but when it comes to conversing it becomes apparent that I haven’t quite grasped that skill. IMHO an iPod app can’t really give you that skill, but I guess you can still come quite a long way with your Spanish.

The best way though to learning a foreign language is through physical interaction with people that speak the language, that way they can tell you what you’re saying or pronouncing incorrectly. It’s learning through mistakes that often lead to remembering the next time around, at least thats how I learn best. You probably know that though.

Yes, there is the disconnect between understanding a language, being able to read and write, and then speaking…even just to yourself. I’ve been trying to say everything outloud so that my mouth knows how to move. I think a lot of learning to speak a new language is muscle memory–your mouth just moves in different ways/patterns. I’ll tackle conversing in a bit…

Wow that was a brilliant video. Of course you can learn Spanish using your phone. There are a lot of application you can use to learn spanish in your phone.
